Signs, Flags, and Lights Requirements
Signs, flags, and lights may be required when moving oversize loads or super loads for the safety of others on the road.
Signs
“Oversize Load” signs are required on all loads that exceed legal dimensions, except for overweight-only loads. These signs must be displayed at both the front and rear of the vehicle. The signs should be made of reflective material and be clearly visible to other drivers. They must have black letters on a yellow background, with letters at least 10” tall and 1.5” wide.
Flags
Flags are required on oversized loads to signal the vehicle’s extended dimensions. In Arkansas, red or orange warning flags (18” Square) should be placed at the extremities of the load:
- (4) flags are required if the load exceeds the vehicle’s width.
- (1) flag must be placed at each corner of the load.
- Additional flags may be necessary if the load extends more than (4”) beyond the rear of the vehicle.
Lights
The state of Arkansas does not specify light requirements for oversized loads, so lighting requirements ultimately adhere to federal guidelines.
Arkansas Pilot Car Requirements:
- Length: Loads exceeding 75′ to 95′ require (1) rear pilot car on (2) lane roads.
- Width: Loads exceeding 10’6″ to 12′ wide on 2-lane roads require one front pilot car. Load widths of (12’1″ to 14′) require (1) front and (1) rear pilot car on all (2) lane roads, and (1) rear pilot car on all (4) lane roads. Load widths of (14’1″ to 15′) require (1) front and (1) rear pilot car.
- Height: Loads exceeding 15′ require a Height Pole.
- Weight: Check with the state for weight-related pilot car requirements.
Overhang: Loads with front or rear overhangs exceeding (10′) may require pilot cars.
Note: Police escorts for larger loads are looked at on a case-by-case basis.
